The tab didn’t work properly and we didn’t get any sound until we messed with it, well after it was gifted to my nephew… who thought he was given just a regular card. Surprise and torment never happened.

The tab on the outside doesn't make the sound work or not work. If you are referring to the plastic slider inside the card that does trigger the music. -- All cards can be opened and tested before they are given. You should hear the card playing a song and if you do not there is an issue.
My niece and nephew loved it! Their mom - not so much. Haha. Thanks!
